assessments are in place and have been recently updated and shared with staff and parents to promote children’s safety. The management team has created a very close working staff team, who they engage in regular supervisory sessions. They support staff to share their strengths and ideas with colleagues to continue to develop good practice. Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good Staff have a good knowledge and understanding of how to promote children’s learning and development. Children are active learners who are motivated to engage in the wide variety of interesting and challenging activities available to them. Children develop good hand-to-eye coordination skills. For example, they thread objects onto strings, make patterns in boards with small pegs and younger children are thrilled as they manage to throw small balls into crates. Staff promote children’s communication and language effectively. Children that are most able listen to and answer questions posed by the staff and they share stories about their home life. They are also learning simple French, which they are starting to use in everyday play situations. Staff consistently talk to babies who are beginning to use one-and two-word sentences to express themselves. Staff support early walking skills and show great delight as babies take a few independent steps, raising their self-esteem and confidence. Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good Staff support children fully in their understanding of the local community. For example, they provide good opportunities for children to visit a doctor’s surgery, a local building site, and the dentist. Children also love to visit the green grocers to choose fruit and vegetables for meals and snacks, supporting their understanding of a healthy lifestyle. The outdoor area is very well equipped and activities reflect children’s learning indoors. Children are often free to move between the two areas and have many opportunities to develop good independence. Children take part in fun exercise routines, such as, yoga that help them develop their physical skills. Staff help children to understand their expectations for their behaviour. Staff are consistent in their approach and are good role models. Therefore, children learn to share, take turns and be kind to one another. Outcomes for children are good All children make good progress. Children are learning to be independent. Older children learn a wide range of skills which prepares them well for the next step in their education. Their literacy skills are developing well and through a good use of phonics and related activities, children recognise many letters and the sounds they make. Staff promote mathematics well in all areas of the nursery and for their age, children are developing a good depth of knowledge about number, shape and measure.
Summary of key findings for parents
The provision is good • The management team supports staff well and they evaluate and monitor the quality of the provision effectively to continually improve outcomes for all children. • The views of staff, parents and children are highly valued and included in the process of reflective practice. • The staff team provides a very stimulating, easily accessible and welcoming learning environment which children thoroughly enjoy exploring. • Children benefit from a very nurturing environment and a strong key-person system. Staff deployment and supervision of children are good and children form secure attachments with staff and are confident to ask for help. • Staff show a good understanding of how children learn. Their detailed observation and planning systems help them to ensure that they offer children a wide range of interesting and challenging activities. • The nursery have established good links with the community. Parents speak very positively about the care and education their children receive. They are also keen to share information about the flexibility and additional support the staff team offers to meet the needs of the whole family. It is not yet outstanding because: • Although staff benefit from frequent discussions about their performance, the programme for continuous professional development is not precise enough to enhance the quality of teaching to an exceptional level across the nursery.
